Herend Tea Sets and Teaware
Written by Tamar Medzadourian, Paris Tableware, Ridgewood, New Jersey. Updated .
A Herend tea set is a teapot, cups and saucers, a creamer and a covered sugar in one pattern; the manufactory's own six-person tea service is exactly that, with six cups. At Paris Tableware each piece is sold separately, so you choose the pot size, the knob on the lid and the cup shape. Herend rose-knob teapots hold 36, 60 or 84 oz, and a small butterfly pot holds 12 oz.

Herend teapot sizes and knobs
| Teapot | Shape | Holds, height | Patterns in this guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rose knob, medium | 01605 | 36 oz, 5.5 in | Rothschild Bird, Rothschild Garden, Queen Victoria, Queen Victoria (Blue), Princess Victoria Green, Blue and Light Blue, Chinese Bouquet Green, Blue, Raspberry, Rust and Black Sapphire, Golden Edge, Platinum Edge |
| Rose knob, large | 01604 | 60 oz, 6.5 in | Rothschild Bird, Queen Victoria, Chinese Bouquet Green, Blue, Raspberry and Rust, Golden Edge |
| Rose knob, extra large | 01603 | 84 oz, 6.75 in | Queen Victoria only |
| Butterfly knob | 01608 | 12 oz, 4 in | Queen Victoria, Chinese Bouquet Green, Blue and Rust, Golden Edge |
| Bird knob | 01605 | 36 oz, 5.5 in | Rothschild Bird Blue Border and Green Border |
The item number records the knob too. Its final two digits read 09 on rose-knob pots, 17 on butterfly pots and 05 on bird pots. Capacities and heights come from the product pages at Paris Tableware. For a feel of the sizes, a US measuring cup holds 8 oz, so the 36 oz pot holds about four and a half of them, the 60 oz pot seven and a half and the 84 oz pot ten and a half. The 12 oz butterfly pot is a pot for one, or a showpiece on a tea tray.

Cups, saucers and mugs
| Piece | Shape | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tea cup and saucer | 00734 | The standard Herend tea cup; the saucer is 6 in across |
| Canton cup and saucer | 01726 | A second tea cup shape with a 5.5 in saucer, in Rothschild Bird, Queen Victoria, Chinese Bouquet and Golden Edge |
| After-dinner cup and saucer | 00709 and 00711 | A small coffee cup with a 4.5 in saucer; Rothschild Bird sells it by motif |
| Mug | 01729 | 10 oz, 3.5 in high, in most patterns |
| Coffee mug | 00294 | 16 oz, 4 in high, in Rothschild Bird, Queen Victoria and Chinese Bouquet Green and Rust |
Read the item number before you order a pair. After the shape number, a 1 marks the saucer and a 2 marks the cup, and some cups and saucers are separate listings. For example, Herend Rothschild Bird Blue Border Tea Cup, Motif 01 is item RO-EB-00734-2-01, the cup alone. Herend tea cups and saucers for every pattern are gathered in the teacups and saucers collection, and mugs in Herend mugs.

Creamers, sugars and coffee pots
Creamers come in 1.5, 4, 6 and 10 oz, and covered sugars in 4, 6 and 10 oz, depending on the pattern. Most covered sugars have a rose knob to match the rose-knob teapots, and the Green and Brown Border versions of Rothschild Bird use a bird. Coffee pots come in two sizes: 36 oz, 8.5 inches high, and 60 oz, 10 inches high. Browse them in Herend creamers and sugar bowls.
Putting a Herend tea set together
- Choose the pot. Size first, then the knob. A rose knob suits every pattern; the butterfly and bird knobs are a small signature on the patterns that offer them.
- Count the cups. Herend's own tea services come for two or for six people. Buy cups and saucers for the number you usually serve, plus one or two spares.
- Add the creamer and the covered sugar. Keep their size in proportion to the pot: the 4 or 6 oz pair beside a 36 oz pot, the 10 oz pair beside a 60 or 84 oz pot.
- Mix if you like. A Golden Edge pot with Chinese Bouquet or Rothschild Bird cups looks deliberate, because the shapes and the gold trim are shared.

Common questions
Does Herend make tea sets?
Yes. Herend's own tea service for six is a rose-knob teapot, six cups with saucers, a creamer and a sugar bowl. At Paris Tableware the same pieces are sold individually, so you choose the size and pattern of each.
What sizes do Herend teapots come in?
At Paris Tableware: a 12 oz butterfly-knob pot, rose-knob pots of 36 oz and 60 oz, and an 84 oz rose-knob pot in Queen Victoria. Rothschild Bird Blue Border and Green Border have a 36 oz pot with a bird knob.
What are the rose, butterfly and bird knobs?
Small porcelain figures that form the handle of the lid. You can tell them apart in the item number: rose-knob pots end in 09, butterfly pots in 17 and bird pots in 05.
Are Herend tea cups sold with their saucers?
It depends on the listing. In Herend item numbers a 1 after the shape number marks the saucer and a 2 marks the cup, so check the item number and order both when they are listed separately.
